History

1830 - BMI

Body Mass Index, invented by Adolphe Quetelet, provides a relationship between weight and height, with ranges between normal, overweight and obese.

1990 - Waist Circumference

Waist Circumference, increasingly used in recent years to assess abdominal fat for chronic disease risk.

1993 - Waist to Hip Ratio

Waist-Hip-Ratio, first theorised by Dr Devendra Singh, measures the relationship beetween the circumference of the waist and the hip.

2000 - BVI

Initially developed in January 2000, The Body Volume Index is the world's first computer based anthropometric system and measures weight, visceral and subcutaneous fat distribution in the body.  Particular importance is attached to the percentage of weight in the abdominal area relative to the rest of the body.
